Make Mine a Magnum….

Helsinki Magnum StoreWith the end of the school year being celebrated here last Saturday, Jimmy and I celebrated getting through what had been a challenging year for him (having had to learn a whole new language along with being without his mum and sister who he was very close to) by getting lunch at the local Hard Rock Cafe.   After lunch we were heading to catch our bus home and stumbled upon the Magum Pleasure Store on Mannerheimintie.   The thought of making your own Magnum ice
cream sounded intriguing so we popped inside.

It was pretty obvious we weren’t the only ones who found the idea tempting as the store was packed with families out celebrating the end of the school year.  We joined the queue and eventually found our way to the counter where for, what I felt was a reasonable, 5 Euros you could make your own Magnum.

The first step is to choose your toppings from the extensive list of sweet and savoury toppings, yes chilli flakes was one of the toppings and someone I have since spoken to has also said they have seen bacon there as well.

Once you have chosen the toppings they are taken and put into a shaker and mixed up well.

Next you get to choose which flavoured chocolate you want (Dark, Milk or White) and a plain ice cream is taken and dipped in your pick.   With the chocolate still runny it is placed in a special little cardboard tray and the toppings spread over both sides.

While here you are also able to order a coffee or wine (still or sparkling) and there is also a bar / cafe area where you can order other food and drinks by the looks.

This is only a pop-up store and is open in Helsinki until August 20, 2016, so don’t leave it too late to enjoy your customised Magnum treat.

There are a number of Magnum pop-up stores throughout the world this summer, with ones I have been able to confirm being located in the following cities;

So keep an eye out for one in your travels, they are definitely worth trying at least once…..  although I somehow know that this was not our last visit this summer….

After a brief flirtation with Japan in the early '90's, and some occasional trips to Australia since, I have had an unrequited love affair with Japan and general desire to explore the world for the next 20 years while reality prevailed and I found myself pretty much stuck in my home country of New Zealand (not that is an entirely bad thing...).After a chance opportunity arose in mid 2012 to relocate our family to Moscow, Russian Federation I finally set off on my OE with my family in tow. It has been an amazing journey that has seen us experience life in Russia, Japan and now Finland, as well as visiting around a dozen countries so far in our adventure to date. While my family situation has changed along the way, I am continuing to explore the world with my tri-lingual son and enjoy sharing the adventures we have had with my followers.

  1. Hi Tony,
    I must admit that looking at that ice cream restaurant mentioned in your article that it brought back fond memories of a place that years ago working as a counselor up in Maine, (USA) at a music camp there was such an ice cream store that allowed you to make your own ice cream treat, be it a giant sundae or simply a cone.

    That store looks absolutely neat, allowing customers to design their own ice cream treat – flavor(s) of ice cream, and whatever novelties, (sprinkles, toppings, fruit, candy, etc.) on the final product to be eaten.
    I will admit that in reading what else is available at the store, wine and coffee, these items were not on the menu at this Maine ice cream store which was insanely popular in the summer. In fact on two nights every summer they bused the entire camp of 200 kids ages 9 – 17 in the evening to allow them to get their own ice cream treats – paid for by the camp’s owners. I do remember that they had miniature golf and baseball batting cages in which you tried to hit balls pitched by a machine for extra entertainment.

    So they do have one of these Magnum stores here in the USA in New York City, info you posted in your article. The next time I’m up that way I’m going to have to remember to visit this ice cream place for dessert!

    Great article, Tony!

  2. wow, the magnum makes your mouth water. Living in the USA I am not able to get the magnum like you in the UK. Its always nice to give yourself and your loved ones a special treat, I am happy for the young boy getting the magnum special treat he looks like he deserves it and is going to enjoy it so much.

    1. He did enjoy it and had deserved it after making such progress during the school year in a language he had never spoken prior to the start of the year.
